Today we saw a trailer for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. It is due to come out this year, and it's the sequel to 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which gave an account of life before the happenings before the original Planet of the Apes movies from the 1960s and 1970s. Like Rise of the Planet of the Apes, this one includes Andy Serkis as Caesar. The other actors, though, are very different. There's no James Franco, and Jason Clarke and Keri Russell star as people who want to be friends with the apes, while Gary Oldman is determined to war with them.
Hollywood has too many sequels and remakes, but in this case I think they're on to a good thing. Rise of the Planet of the Apes used the more advanced technology available tastefully to make a really good movie that didn't overlap with the original Charlton Heston movies. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes appears to be faithful to that world and to take the story in new and exciting directions. I'm looking forward to watching Gary Oldman, too.
